Three Ex d switchgear panels with Ex e enclosures for refinery — HARDO control boxes

Case study · Refinery

500 W of heat dissipation inside a sealed Ex d enclosure. Solved without compromising ATEX compliance.

HARDO was tasked with designing a complete Ex d switchgear system to control ventilation and heating at a refinery site. The system needed to power and control a fan, compressor, condenser and electric heater within an ATEX II 2G classified area. Total power dissipation exceeded 500 W. Inside sealed enclosures at ambient temperatures reaching 40°C, this would have pushed internal operating temperatures far beyond the 55°C limit for the installed components.

The solution was to distribute the controls across three separate Ex d enclosures interconnected by Ex e junction boxes, ensuring no single enclosure exceeded 140 W. The most temperature-sensitive components, including the frequency inverters, were positioned at the lowest point in the enclosures where temperatures are naturally lower. The result is a system that maintains stable operating temperatures regardless of weather conditions, in full compliance with ATEX and IEC 60079.
