MP 20

MP 20 is a highly flexible EPDM multi-purpose hose with conductive wall below 10⁶ ohm in both inner tube and outer coating. PN 20 bar working pressure and 80 bar burst pressure (4x safety factor) make the hose suitable for high-pressure water, compressed air and chemical distribution. The operating range -40 to +120 C is broader than most competitor multi-purpose hoses. Three blue longitudinal stripes on the outer wall are a visual identification marker. Typically used in chemical industry, agriculture, municipal services and mechanical engineering where a high-pressure and broad-media-resistant hose is required.

Why this hose?

The conductive wall is the key to MP 20's ATEX-suitable character. Unlike ordinary multi-purpose hoses which are typically insulating, MP 20 has a specific conductive additive in the EPDM matrix that makes the entire wall conductive. This means static electricity discharges naturally to ground, eliminating a critical spark risk in ATEX zones.

PN 20 bar / BP 80 bar (4x safety factor) is heavy-duty industrial high-pressure rating. This is above what standard multi-purpose hoses deliver (typically 10-16 bar PN), and reflects MP 20's design focus on high-pressure applications. The broad safety margin is critical because multi-media applications often involve transient pressure peaks from different pump types.

EPDM's broad temperature range (-40 to +120 C) is a major advantage in multi-purpose applications. The hose can be installed in frost-exposed outdoor installations (winter, construction sites) and simultaneously handle hot water or hot process gas applications without re-positioning. This reduces the need for separate hoses for different temperature zones.

Where it is used

Chemical production facilities use the hose as high-pressure multi-purpose distribution where multiple media pass through the same hose type. PN 20 bar covers most process pressures in chemical industry, and the conductive wall eliminates the need for separate grounding systems at each connection point.

Agricultural installations use the hose for water, chemical and fuel distribution on tractors and self-propelled agricultural machines. The conductive wall is particularly valuable when fuelling where static spark risk is a reality. EPDM's weather resistance ensures the hose can be exposed outdoors throughout the season.

Municipal service vehicles (sweepers, snow ploughs, service trucks) use the hose for compressed air and water distribution. The broad temperature range and PN 20 bar pressure rating allow the hose to handle both winter cold and hot water cleaning applications without losing flexibility.

The hose is colloquially known as a conductive multi-purpose hose, EPDM 20 bar hose or blue-striped EPDM hose.

Fields without a value (—) are not specified in the manufacturer's factsheet. Overpressure and underpressure values are recommended operating limits; the product can be subjected to higher loads on request. Bend radius is measured along the inside of the hose bend.

Standards and compliance

The hose is qualified per the central standards for industrial hoses with electrical properties.

  • EN ISO 1307:2008. European standard for rubber and thermoplastic hoses for general use.
  • ISO 8031. Determination of electrical and surface resistance in rubber and plastic hoses. The hose's core and cover are tested below 10⁶ Ω.
  • EN 12115. European standard for rubber and thermoplastic hoses for liquids and chemicals.
  • RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU). Restriction of hazardous substances.
  • REACH (EC 1907/2006). Registration of chemical substances.
  • ISO 9001:2015. Quality management system at the manufacturer.
  • ATEX 2014/34/EU. EU directive for equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres. The hose has conductive wall, but explicit ATEX declaration is not in the factsheet.

Industries that use it

MP 20 is used where a high-pressure multi-purpose hose must combine broad media range with conductive function - typically in chemical industry, agriculture and municipal services.

Chemical industry and laboratories use the hose for high-pressure liquid distribution where multiple different media must be handled by the same hose. EPDM's broad chemical resistance (water, acids, bases, many solvents) makes the hose suitable for process installations where media changes occur regularly. The conductive wall is a safety advantage in ATEX zones.

Agriculture and municipal services use the hose for combined water, chemical and compressed air distribution. PN 20 bar is plenty for mobile pump systems on tractors and service vehicles. The conductive wall is particularly valuable when handling fuel or combustible chemicals where static spark risk must be controlled.

Mechanical engineering and compressor applications use the hose as high-pressure compressed air distribution between central compressors and flexible movable or mobile work stations. The broad temperature range (-40 to +120 C) allows the hose to be installed both indoors and outdoors without temperature-related degradation.

Custom lengths and assemblies

The hose can be delivered cut to desired lengths. The standard roll can be supplemented with shorter pieces or multiple rolls by arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

What makes MP 20 a multi-purpose hose?

EPDM construction with conductive wall covers a wide media portfolio: water, compressed air, many chemicals, solvents and coolants. The operating range -40 to +120 C is broader than most competitor multi-purpose hoses, and PN 20 bar working pressure makes the hose suitable for high-pressure compressed air and high-pressure water applications.

What does conductive wall mean here?

Both inner tube and outer coating are qualified as electrically conductive (below 10⁶ ohm). This is a special safety property in applications where compressed air or chemical flow can build static electricity. The conductive wall directly discharges the charge to ground and prevents spark-induced ignition.

What is special about the blue longitudinal stripes?

The hose has 3 blue longitudinal stripes (Längsstreifen) along the outer wall - a visual identification marker that distinguishes MP 20 from other EPDM multi-purpose hoses on the market. The blue stripes make it easy to identify MP 20 in racks with multiple hoses and is an industry convention for conductive multi-purpose hoses.

How many dimensions are in the range?

4 dimensions: ID 10, 13, 19 and 25 mm. All have the same pressure rating (20 bar PN, 80 bar burst) and 40 m standard roll length. This is a specialised range for smaller supply pipes and flexible connections - typically where a high-pressure multi-purpose hose is required.

What temperature does the hose tolerate?

-40 to +120 C. This is a broad temperature range for a multi-purpose hose - covers from frost-exposed installations to hot-water applications. EPDM retains flexibility at -40 C and tolerates hot water up to +120 C without losing integrity.

Which couplings are recommended?

For 20 bar working pressure, metal crimp clamps or hydraulic couplings with integrated grounding tab (to preserve the conductive wall's function) are recommended. Standard worm-drive clamps work at low pressures but provide lower leak safety in cyclic operation. We typically fit couplings to the hose by arrangement.

Which media can the hose handle?

The factsheet's list covers broadly: compressed air, water (cold and hot), process water, ultra-pure water, cooling water, paints/coatings, liquid media in agriculture and industry. Note that the hose is designed for liquid media (the factsheet specifies Liquid as primary), so for pure compressed air a specialised compressed air hose can give better weight and price.

Is the hose ATEX-approved?

The hose has a conductive wall (below 10⁶ ohm), making it suitable for ATEX zone 22 and potentially zone 1 installations where a conductive shield is required. The factsheet does not however specify an explicit ATEX 2014/34/EU directive declaration. For formal ATEX installation we recommend cross-checking with your local risk assessment.
