PROTAPE ALU-PES 369 ANTI-BACTERIAL

PROTAPE ALU-PES 369 ANTI-BACTERIAL is a highly flexible ventilation hose with an aluminium-polyester wall and an anti-microbial surface. The wall's anti-bacterial effect is verified per ISO 22196 and the hose is flame retardant per C.S.T.B. class M1. It is used for air supply in hospitals, food production, pharma cleanrooms and general HVAC, where air hygiene is part of the specification.

Why this hose?

Anti-bacterial function on the duct surface itself is not a replacement for filtration, but a complement that reduces growth of bacteria and fungi on the inside over time. This is particularly valuable in installations where duct cleaning is difficult (long concealed runs, permanently boxed-in ducts) and where air microbiology is part of the zone specification.

The aluminium-polyester laminate has two practical advantages beyond hygiene. The aluminium layer reflects heat - improving thermal efficiency in cooling ducts and reducing condensation at temperature-zone transitions. The polyester layer carries the anti-microbial additive while providing mechanical integrity to the wall.

10:1 compressibility is significant in logistics. A 10 m duct can be transported as a 1 m bundle, making the hose well-suited to retrofit installations where access to service shafts is restricted. The hose is light enough that a single fitter can handle large dimensions alone.

Where it is used

Hospitals are the classic use: ventilation in operating theatres, isolation zones and broader clinical departments where air hygiene is front of mind. The anti-bacterial wall surface reduces biofilm growth on the inside, extending the interval between duct cleaning cycles.

Food factories and pharma cleanrooms use the hose for ventilation and cooling in production halls. The hose is not in contact with product, but the air passing through is often part of the zone specification - and an anti-bacterial duct surface is a pragmatic improvement to the preventive air-hygiene picture.

HVAC in office, school and institutional buildings uses the hose as standard ventilation hose where flame-retardant classification and anti-bacterial surface are nice-to-have or required by local building codes. The aluminium layer contributes to thermal efficiency in cooling ducts.

The hose is colloquially known as an ALU-PES hose or anti-bacterial ventilation hose.

Fields without a value (—) are not specified in the manufacturer's factsheet. Overpressure and underpressure values are recommended operating limits; the product can be subjected to higher loads on request. Bend radius is measured along the inside of the hose bend.

Standards and compliance

The hose is manufactured to recognised standards for anti-microbial testing and European building material classification. ISO 22196 and C.S.T.B. M1 are the primary references.

  • ISO 22196. Measurement of antibacterial activity on plastics and other non-porous surfaces. Standard test for qualification of anti-bacterial additive effect.
  • ASTM G21. Determination of resistance to fungal growth on synthetic polymer materials. Verifies the hose does not support growth of aspergillus and similar.
  • C.S.T.B. class M1. French building material classification for non-combustible/marginally combustible materials. Standard qualification for ventilation ducts in public and commercial construction.
  • RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU). Restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products. Manufacturer declaration on file.
  • REACH (EC 1907/2006). Registration, evaluation and restriction of chemical substances. Manufacturer declaration on request.
  • EN 13501-1. European harmonised classification of building materials for fire properties. C.S.T.B. M1 is the French equivalent; EN 13501-1 is not specifically verified on this product.
  • ISO 9001:2015. Quality management system at the manufacturer. Ensures each batch follows the same specification.

Help with material selection

Although this hose isn't ATEX-relevant, these two articles provide useful background on electrical resistance and industrial safety — important if you later combine the hose with electrical equipment or work in mixed environments:

Industries that use it

The hose is used where air hygiene and flexible installation must be combined - typically in HVAC, hospitals, food halls and pharma cleanrooms.

Hospitals and healthcare facilities are the classic market. Patient rooms, isolation zones and operating theatres have heightened air hygiene requirements, and an anti-bacterial duct surface reduces long-term biofilm load. The combination of compressibility and low weight simplifies retrofit in buildings with constrained service shafts.

Food production uses the hose in ventilation and cooling systems in production halls where the HACCP plan addresses air microbiology. The hose is not a food-contact hose, but its anti-bacterial wall surface supports hygienic indoor air in raw material areas, cold rooms and packaging zones.

Pharma cleanrooms and laboratories use the hose for local extraction tap-offs and flexible connections to pulse-stable units. The ISO 22196 and ASTM G21 tests are recognised in pharma validation documentation, and the C.S.T.B. M1 classification also applies where fire resistance is part of the zone qualification.

Custom lengths and assemblies

The hose can be delivered cut to desired lengths. The standard roll can be supplemented with shorter pieces or multiple rolls by arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

Is PROTAPE ALU-PES 369 ANTI-BACTERIAL a food-contact hose?

No. The hose is anti-bacterial on the wall surface per ISO 22196 and anti-fungal per ASTM G21, but the factsheet does not specify EU 1935/2004 or FDA approval for direct food contact. The hose is intended for airborne transport - typically ventilation in food production halls, not product-carrying lines.

How is the anti-bacterial effect achieved?

The hose wall is an aluminium-polyester laminate with an anti-microbial additive embedded in the polyester layer. The effect is surface-based: bacteria and fungal spores that land on the inside have reduced growth. The effect is verified by standardised laboratory tests (ISO 22196 for bacteria, ASTM G21 for fungi). The hose still needs regular cleaning - anti-bacterial means reduced growth, not zero contamination.

What does compressibility 10:1 mean?

The hose can be compressed to one tenth of its extended length. A 10 m hose can be stored at 1 m and stretched out at the installation point. This is a major logistical advantage for installations where long duct runs must be supplied through a small technical room.

Is the hose flame retardant?

Yes - the wall is classified as flame retardant per C.S.T.B. class M1 (French building standard). This means the hose does not support self-sustained combustion under standardised test conditions. It is a common EU building material qualification for ventilation, but does not replace EN 13501-1 if the project specifically requires an EU-harmonised class.

What air flow rate can the hose handle?

Maximum air velocity is 30 m/s. That is plenty for most HVAC applications (typically 5-15 m/s in ducts). High pressure is not the hose's strong point - max 300 mmH2O (approx. 30 mbar). For high-pressure applications with clogged filters or long duct runs we recommend a more robust hose.

What colour is the hose?

Silver. The aluminium layer on the outside gives the metallic appearance, and the polyester layer on the inside carries the anti-bacterial additive. The colour is practical in visible installations because it reflects heat and contributes to thermal efficiency in cooling ducts.

Which dimensions does the hose come in?

16 dimensions from 76 mm to 610 mm inner diameter, all with 10 m standard roll length. This covers everything from smaller local extraction arms to main ducts in larger HVAC installations. All dimensions have the same max pressure (300 mmH2O) - wall thickness scales with diameter.

Can the hose be delivered in shorter lengths?

Yes - we cut the hose to length as needed. The standard 10 m roll is the norm, but shorter pieces or specific lengths with couplings can be assembled by arrangement. At Particulair we advise on sizing and coupling choice so you get the right complete system.
