Food and pharmaceutical production

Food & Pharma hoses

Hoses for direct food contact and pharmaceutical production. Materials that withstand CIP/SIP cycles, and documentation that holds up to a GMP audit.

Compliance in food and pharma production is not about words on paper. It is about whether an independent auditor can trace any given hose back to the manufacturer's Declaration of Compliance, batch number and the specific regulation (EU 1935/2004, FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, USP Class VI) it has been tested against.

In food and pharma production, missing documentation is the most common reason a line gets stopped. We distribute hoses from manufacturers who supply complete DoC per batch, and where material choice is validated against repeated CIP/SIP cycles.

On this page you will find the hoses we recommend for direct food contact, hygienic production and pharma applications. Filter on standard and property in the left column to narrow the list to those hoses that match your specific compliance profile.

The compliance framework you actually have to meet

Food and pharma hoses sit in a regulatory landscape where several independent frameworks impose different requirements on the same component. It matters which ones are binding and which are necessary supplements.

EU 1935/2004 and EU 10/2011

EU 1935/2004 is the framework regulation for materials in contact with food. It places responsibility on the manufacturer to ensure that the material does not release substances in quantities that could pose a health hazard or alter the food's composition, taste or smell.
EU 10/2011 (Plastics Implementation Measure) supplements with specific migration limits for plastics: an overall limit of 60 mg/kg plus product-specific limits for individual substances. The regulation requires the manufacturer to issue a Declaration of Compliance (DoC).

FDA 21 CFR 177.2600

FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 covers rubber articles intended for repeated food contact and is the specific regulation for food-grade elastomers on the US market. The standard specifies which chemical components (additives, fillers, vulcanising agents and so on) may be used in the rubber, and at what maximum concentrations. Hoses marked FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 have been migration-tested under the standard's specific conditions.

USP Class VI

USP Class VI is the strictest class in the United States Pharmacopeia for elastomer biocompatibility. Where FDA 21 CFR addresses food contact, USP Class VI addresses direct contact with pharmaceutical products, biotech fluids, or materials subsequently administered to patients. The class tests for systemic toxicity, intracutaneous reactivity and implantation response. Materials tested to Class VI may also meet FDA requirements; the reverse does not apply.

For the deeper background on material choice and chemical resistance, see the chemical-resistance documentation.

Questions we are asked often

What is the difference between FDA-approved and EU 1935/2004?

FDA 21 CFR regulates which specific chemical components may be present in materials for food contact on the US market. EU 1935/2004 is a framework regulation that places responsibility on the manufacturer to ensure materials do not release substances in quantities that could pose a health hazard. EU 10/2011 supplements with specific migration limits for plastics.

Which materials can withstand CIP cleaning?

Silicone and EPDM typically tolerate repeated CIP cycles with 80-90 °C alkaline lye and acid. PTFE handles higher temperatures and a wider chemical range, but is stiffer. Polyurethane tolerates short CIP exposure but degrades faster under repeated cycles. The manufacturer's factsheet always specifies maximum temperature and chemical exposure.

Must every part of the hose be food-approved?

Every part in direct contact with the food must meet applicable requirements: inner hose wall, couplings, gaskets, valves. Outer covers and reinforcement may be non-approved materials. When changing products, the entire chain must be assessed because chemical residue may migrate from previous processes.

How do I document compliance for a GMP audit?

Retain the manufacturer's Declaration of Compliance (DoC) for each hose article, the batch number on delivered hoses, and a production-traceability chain that links back to the DoC. For CIP/SIP validation: document test cycles, temperatures and cleaning chemistry. A change of material or supplier requires re-validation.

What is USP Class VI, and when is it relevant?

USP Class VI is the strictest class in the United States Pharmacopeia for elastomer biocompatibility. The class tests for systemic toxicity, intracutaneous reactivity and implantation response. USP Class VI is relevant for hoses in contact with pharmaceutical products, biotech fluids or materials that are subsequently administered to patients.
