BARDUC PVC 381 FOOD (HD)

BARDUC PVC 381 FOOD (HD) is a heavy-duty food-approved suction and pressure hose in PVC with spring-steel spiral. The hose is certified per EU 10/2011 in four categories (A aqueous, B acidic, C alcoholic up to 20%, D1 dairy) by the stricter 10-day test at 40 C - a significantly more rigorous qualification than the standard 5-minute test. With 25 dimensions from ID 10 mm to 101.5 mm, 0.7-0.85 bar vacuum and 3.6-7 bar working pressure, the hose covers many food processes. Typically used for bulk bag charging, feed transport, dosing systems and general food liquid/granulate handling.

Why this hose?

The 10-day EU 10/2011 test is the most distinctive property. Standard food hose tests are only 5 minutes at 40 C - sufficient to confirm no short-term chemical migration, but not a qualification for prolonged contact. The 10-day test simulates continuous contact over several days, placing BARDUC PVC 381 FOOD (HD) in a higher qualification class than most competitor food-grade hoses.

The spring-steel spiral is what makes the hose both heavy-duty (HD) and vacuum-resistant. PVC alone would collapse under vacuum and deform under pressure cycling - the spiral prevents this and maintains the hose's circular cross-section even under full 0.85 bar vacuum. This makes the hose suitable for combined suction/pressure applications where a separate suction hose and pressure hose would otherwise be required.

The wide dimension portfolio (25 dimensions from 10 mm to 101.5 mm) is a logistical advantage. A food manufacturer can choose BARDUC PVC 381 FOOD (HD) for all internal installation dimensions without having to evaluate alternative hose types. The same product family covers from dosing pumps to main supply pipes.

Where it is used

Food factories use the hose for everything from raw material reception (bulk tank-to-tank distribution) to internal process flow and to finished product filling. The wide dimension portfolio means the same supplier can cover an entire production installation, simplifying purchasing and spare parts management.

Feed factories use the hose in vacuum conveyor systems that transport feed pellets from production units to storage silos or directly to packaging stations. 0.85 bar vacuum rating is typically the maximum practical vacuum in feed installations, and the hose's heavy-duty construction provides good service life in continuous operation.

Pharma facilities use the hose for internal transport of raw materials (lactose, mannitol, syrup) between storage tanks and blending stations. EU 10/2011 + LFGB + GMP approvals are typically minimum requirements in pharma, and the 10-day test provides extra margin in revalidation work where the production facility must prove compliance over time.

The hose is colloquially known as a food PVC hose, BARDUC HD or heavy-duty food hose.

Standards and compliance

The hose is qualified per the central European standards for food-contact materials. EU 10/2011 and EU 1935/2004 are the primary references.

  • EU 10/2011 (Cat A, B, C, D1). Food contact regulation - confirmed for categories A (aqueous), B (acidic), C (alcohol up to 20%), D1 (dairy) by 10-day test at 40 C - the stricter qualification.
  • EU 1935/2004 + GMP EU 2023/2006. General framework regulation + Good Manufacturing Practice for food-contact materials.
  • LFGB (German Food and Feed Code). German Food and Feed Code - one of the strictest food approvals in Europe.
  • EN ISO 1307:2008. European standard for rubber and thermoplastic hoses for general use.
  • RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU). Restriction of hazardous substances.
  • REACH (EC 1907/2006). Registration of chemical substances.
  • FDA 21 CFR 177.1520. American FDA approval for food-contact PVC. The hose is not specifically FDA qualified on the factsheet.

Help with material selection

Although this hose isn't ATEX-relevant, these two articles provide useful background on electrical resistance and industrial safety — important if you later combine the hose with electrical equipment or work in mixed environments:

Industries that use it

BARDUC PVC 381 FOOD (HD) is used where a broad food-approved hose portfolio with combined suction and pressure function is required - typically in food industry, feed factories and pharmaceutical production.

Food industry is the main market. The wide dimension portfolio (10-101.5 mm) covers from smaller dosing installations to main supply pipes in large production facilities. The EU 10/2011 Cat A-D1 approval covers most food liquids (aqueous, acidic, alcoholic, dairy), and the 10-day test is a differentiating property compared to competitor hoses.

Feed and agricultural industries use the hose for feed pellet transport, granulate distribution and bulk bag handling. The spring-steel spiral's collapse resistance (0.7-0.85 bar vacuum) makes the hose suitable for vacuum conveyor systems typical in modern feed factories.

Pharma production uses the hose for bulk transport of liquid raw materials where food-grade approval is the minimum requirement. EU 10/2011 + LFGB + GMP approvals cover pharma-related regulations for non-direct-patient-contact applications. For direct patient contact we recommend a specialised medical-grade hose.

Custom lengths and assemblies

The hose can be delivered cut to desired lengths. The standard roll can be supplemented with shorter pieces or multiple rolls by arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

Which foodstuffs can the hose handle?

The hose is certified per EU 10/2011 in four categories (A, B, C, D1) - aqueous (category A), acidic (B), alcoholic up to 20% (C) and dairy (D1). The test conditions are 10 days at 40 C, which is a particularly rigorous test (most food hoses are tested only 5 minutes at 40 C). EU 1935/2004, GMP and LFGB approvals are also on file.

What makes the 10-day test particularly rigorous?

The standard EU 10/2011 test is 5 minutes at 40 C - sufficient to confirm that the material does not release chemicals on brief contact. The 10-day test simulates prolonged contact and is the stricter qualification level, typically required for hoses that remain in contact with food over several hours or days (storage tanks, continuous flow). This places BARDUC PVC 381 FOOD (HD) in the highest food-grade category.

How many dimensions are in the range?

25 dimensions from ID 10 mm to 101.5 mm - one of the broadest food hose ranges in the industry. Standard roll lengths vary: 100 m for the smallest (10-25 mm), 60 m for medium (30-35 mm), 30 m for larger (38-76 mm), and 20 m for the largest (80-101.5 mm). Note that pressure falls gradually with dimension from 7 bar at 10 mm to 3.6 bar at 101.5 mm.

Is the hose vacuum-resistant?

Yes - 0.7 to 0.85 bar negative pressure depending on dimension. This makes the hose suitable for combined suction and pressure use: bulk bag charging, vacuum conveying, dosing systems and similar. The spring steel spiral is what provides collapse resistance under vacuum.

What is the operating temperature?

-20 to +70 C with short-term peak up to +80 C. This is PVC's limit, but covers most food process intensities incl. CIP cleaning with warm water. For higher temperatures (above 80 C) we recommend a silicone or butyl-based hose like NORFLEX SIL 408 or MILKCORD SP BUTYL.

Is the hose ATEX-suitable for powder handling?

The hose has NO explicit antistatic or conductive specification on the factsheet. The PVC wall is typically insulating. For ATEX zone 22 applications with powder explosion risk, we recommend PROTAPE PUR-INOX 330 FOOD-AS (LD) which has both food approval and ATEX qualification.

Which couplings are recommended?

For food production, hygiene couplings (DIN 11851 dairy couplings, Tri-Clamp, RJT or SMS) pre-fitted are recommended. This ensures quick disassembly for CIP cleaning. We fit couplings by arrangement; send us a configuration and we'll advise on coupling choice.

Why 'HD' in the name?

HD = Heavy-Duty. This refers to the hose being rated for higher working pressure (up to 7 bar on the smallest) and better vacuum (0.85 bar) than standard food hose ranges. Wall thickness increases from 3 mm on the 10 mm version to 7.25 mm on the 101.5 mm version. The HD designation signals industrial-grade use in contrast to home use or laboratory grade.
