AIRDUC® PUR 355 FISH (HD)

Wear-resistant PUR hose in heavy-duty construction from inner Ø 101.5 mm up to Ø 500 mm, with a 1.5 mm wall and embedded steel spiral. The smooth inner surface makes it equally suited to two purposes: pneumatic conveying of abrasive media at industrial volumes, and pumping live fish and fish feed in aquaculture. Not all PUR hoses cover both — the smooth wall is the defining feature.

Why this hose?

AIRDUC® PUR 355 FISH (HD) is developed for two distinct but related uses. The first is aquaculture — pumping live fish, fish feed and sludge from net pens and farming tanks. The smooth inner surface protects the fish during transport and prevents residue from sticking to the wall.

The second is high-volume transfer of abrasive media — granulates, powders, grain and bulk dry solids at industrial scale. The heavy-duty PUR wall delivers long service life against wear: measured in Taber tests, PUR typically lasts 5–10 times longer than PVC or rubber under the same abrasion. It is the same material property that makes it both food-grade and abrasion-resistant.

It is food-grade certified per EU 1935/2004, EU 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, and tested for categories A, B, C, D2 and E in EU 10/2011. It is not ATEX approved — for conveying combustible dust or gas in classified zones, choose an EC or AS variant.

Important context

Abrasion resistance is not the same as ATEX suitability. Polyurethane has high mechanical wear resistance against granulates and particles, but standard PUR hoses are insulating — they do not conduct static electricity. For ATEX zones with combustible dust, choose the AS or EC variant of the same base construction.

In dry pneumatic transport of particulate material, static charges always arise due to friction against the hose wall. If the environment is ATEX-classified, an insulating hose is a safety risk.

Where it is used

The hose is used wherever a smooth, food-grade inner wall is decisive — whether the medium is biological or mineral. In aquaculture it sits in fish pumps, feed lines and sludge transport, where residue must not stick to the wall.

In industrial applications it is used for high-volume pneumatic conveying of granulates and powders, bulk-bag filling and discharging, tank loading and silo transport. The smooth wall reduces flow loss at high velocities and keeps the inner surface clean.

In municipal vehicles and sweeping vehicles it sits in suction lines where mixed waste, dust and wet media pass through the same system. The 1.5 mm heavy-duty wall resists mechanical wear without losing flexibility.

The formal name is AIRDUC® PUR 355 FISH (HD). In daily use it is often called the "fish hose" or "aquaculture PUR hose", although it is also widely used in industrial applications where a smooth inner wall is an advantage.

Why "FISH" in the name?

The manufacturer chose the FISH suffix because the smooth inner surface is a critical parameter in aquaculture — fish must be pumpable without being damaged by irregularities in the hose wall. But that same smooth wall is an advantage in dry-bulk conveying at high flow velocity, because friction is lower and wear is not concentrated in any one spot. That is why the product appears in several distinct applications in the manufacturer's reference list.

Dimensions and ordering

AIRDUC® PUR 355 FISH (HD) is supplied in 12 standard sizes from inner Ø 101.5 mm to 500 mm. Each size has its own article number at the manufacturer. Standard roll length is typically 10 m, and the hose can be cut to length.

Note: Fields without a value (—) are not specified in the manufacturer's factsheet. Overpressure and underpressure are recommended operating limits; the product can be subjected to higher loads on request. Bend radius is measured along the inside of the hose. Standards and compliance

The hose is tested and certified to the following standards:

  • EU 1935/2004. European framework regulation for materials in contact with food. The hose's components are tested to meet the general requirements for food contact.
  • EU 10/2011. Plastics Implementation Measure — specific requirements for plastic materials in food contact. The hose is tested for categories A (aqueous), B (acidic pH<4.5), C (alcohol <20 %), D2 (dairy) and E (dry foods).
  • FDA 21 CFR 177.2600. US Food and Drug Administration requirements for polyurethanes in food contact. The hose's food-grade approval is tested and documented in compliance with this regulation.
  • REACH (EC 1907/2006). EU regulation on registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals. The hose's materials are REACH-compliant; manufacturer's declaration is available for download.
  • RoHS (Directive 2011/65/EU). Restriction of Hazardous Substances — restriction on the use of certain hazardous substances in electronic products. The hose's components comply with RoHS limit values.

Industries that use it

The hose is used across a wide range of industries because the combination of food-grade PUR and high abrasion resistance is uncommon. The list below follows the manufacturer's application documentation for the product.

In aquaculture, this is among the most widely used hoses for pumping live fish and feed — the smooth inner surface is critical for fish survival. In agriculture, it is used for pneumatic conveying of grain, feed and seed, where high throughput combined with food-grade approval is required.

In the chemical and ceramic industries, it sits in bulk transfer of powders and granulates where the medium demands both abrasion resistance and clean surfaces. In paper, glass and construction industries, it is used for high-volume conveying of powders and fillers that would wear out a standard PVC hose within weeks.

In municipal vehicles, it sits in sweeping vehicles and suction trucks. In shipbuilding, it is used for tank loading and cleaning. In the automotive industry, it features in powder and granulate handling on test rigs and production lines.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an abrasive hose last?

Service life depends on medium aggressiveness, flow velocity and hose dimension. PUR hoses typically last 5-10 times longer than PVC under the same load. Service intervals are typically 6-18 months under continuous operation.

Can abrasive hoses be used in ATEX zones?

Standard abrasive PUR hoses are NOT ATEX-approved — they are insulating. For ATEX zones, choose the AS or EC variant of the same base construction.

What's the difference between HD and XHD?

HD (heavy-duty) has a heavier wall than standard MD (medium-duty). XHD (extra heavy-duty) has an even thicker wall and reinforced spiral, for the most abrasive media such as glass beads and metal chips.

Can the hose be kinked by sharp bends?

If the bend radius is less than specified in the factsheet, yes. PUR hoses are very flexible but have a minimum bend radius of about 5 × inner Ø. Forced bending below this radius permanently damages the spiral.

Can the hose be cut to length?

Yes. Custom cutting is a standard service from Particulair. We cut the hose to the desired length, install couplings if required, and ship it ready to use.
