Abrasive hoses
Hoses for granulates, sand, glass beads, grain and plastic pellets. Materials that withstand wear hour after hour, and dimensions that hold their shape bend after bend.
Abrasion resistance is not a single property. It is a combination of material choice, wall thickness and the hose's inner geometry — plus how close your process operates to the material's actual wear limit. A factsheet may state 30 mm³ loss per DIN 53516, but that means little if your bend radius is too tight or particles enter at too steep an angle.
For abrasive media, lifetime is what drives the operating budget — and lifetime depends on material choice, wall thickness and velocity. We distribute hoses from manufacturers whose abrasion testing is reported verbatim against recognised standards, and where material choice can be tuned from dry granulate to wet sand.

Wear is about material, geometry and velocity
What we see most often is a hose replaced after six months, with the failure located in the first bend after the inlet. That is not a manufacturing defect. It is sharp particles striking the hose wall at too steep an angle, again and again, slowly eating through the wall thickness.
Materials: PUR, rubber and blends
Polyurethane (PUR) is the standard choice for dry abrasive transport. Polyether PUR handles moisture; polyester PUR has lower wear loss but hydrolyses in wet environments over time. Rubber (NBR, EPDM or natural-rubber blends) has different wear characteristics — better against impact, but typically heavier. For the most abrasive media (steel grit, glass beads), specialist rubbers with high Shore hardness are used.
Inner geometry: smooth or profiled
A smooth inner surface reduces flow resistance and friction. A profiled inner surface (with helix or grooves) handles larger particles and reduces deposition consequences. The choice depends on medium and pressure — pneumatic conveying of soft grain prefers smooth; granulates in food production may require profiled.
Antistatic and ATEX relevance
Many abrasive media — plastic pellets, grain, flour, sugar — generate static electricity during transport and are combustible. If the process sits in an ATEX zone, the hose must also meet TRGS 727 resistance limits (below 10⁶ Ω for conductive, below 10⁹ Ω for antistatic). That excludes cheap PUR hoses without conductive helix.
Questions we are asked often
What determines a hose's abrasion resistance?
Abrasion resistance depends on material (PUR, rubber, blends), wall thickness and inner geometry. Materials are tested per DIN 53516 or ASTM D5963, which measure mass loss in mm³ under standardised wear. Lower mm³ figures mean higher resistance. Note: figures from different standards cannot be compared directly.
What is the difference between polyether and polyester PUR?
Polyether PUR resists moisture and hydrolysis better — relevant for wet processes or outdoor storage. Polyester PUR has better wear and oil resistance but degrades faster in water. Choose polyether for wet environments, polyester for dry processes with high mechanical load.
Should abrasive hoses also be antistatic?
Yes, if the abrasive medium is combustible. Plastic pellets, grain, flour, sugar and many granulates generate static electricity during transport. In ATEX zones, the hose must be conductive or antistatic per TRGS 727. Verify zone classification and medium properties (combustible dust) before choosing.
What lifetime can I expect?
Lifetime depends on medium, velocity, wall thickness and bend radius. For bulk-bag charging of dry granulates, a good PUR hose typically lasts 12-24 months. For sandblasting or sharp particles, lifetime can be weeks. Measure wall thickness periodically — wear is fastest in bends and at the inlet.
Does humidity affect abrasion resistance?
Yes, particularly for polyester PUR, which hydrolyses over time and becomes brittle. Polyether PUR is largely moisture-tolerant. Rubber compounds vary. If the process is wet or the hose is stored outdoors, choose polyether PUR or rubber specifically approved for wet environments.
