Why this hose?
When abrasive media are conveyed in the food and pharmaceutical industries, two challenges meet at once. The hose has to withstand mechanical wear from granulates, powders and solid particles. At the same time, it must meet formal requirements for food contact and remain cleanable without releasing unintended substances into the process. AIRDUC® PUR 351 FOOD (MD) addresses both in a single construction.
The hose is made of food-grade polyurethane, certified by an independent laboratory for the complete hose in accordance with EU Directive 10/2011, EC 1935/2004 and EU 2015/174. It complies with FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 and the German Food and Feed Code (LFGB), and is manufactured following good manufacturing practice (GMP) per EC 2023/2006. This means the hose can be used in direct contact with dry, acidic, aqueous, alcoholic and dairy-based foodstuffs.
"MD" stands for medium duty. It is the practical middle option: tight enough to handle abrasive media such as granulates, powders and dried products in industrial volumes, while remaining flexible and easy to handle. For more extreme wear loads, the hose is also available as heavy duty (HD) and extra heavy duty (XHD) variants.
The food-grade approval applies to the complete hose. It is not only the inner PUR liner that has been tested and approved, but the hose as a finished product. This matters because some hoses on the market are certified at component level only (the liner) but not as a complete hose. The independent laboratory test of the complete hose is a stronger guarantee.

Note: Fields without a value (—) are not specified in the manufacturer's factsheet. Overpressure and underpressure values are recommended operating limits; the product can be subjected to higher loads on request. Bend radius is measured along the inside of the hose bend.
Standards and compliance
The hose is tested and documented in compliance with the following European and international standards.
- EU 1935/2004. European framework regulation for materials in contact with food. The hose is approved as a complete product, not only at component level.
- EU 10/2011 (categories A, B, C, D2 and E). Detailed requirements for plastic materials in food contact. The hose is tested and approved for aqueous, acidic, alcoholic, dairy-based and dry foodstuffs.
- FDA 21 CFR 177.2600. The US Food and Drug Administration approval for rubber elastomers in repeated food contact. The food-grade polyurethane meets the requirements.
- LFGB. The German Lebensmittel-, Bedarfsgegenstände- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch (Food, Commodities and Feed Code), the national German implementation of common European food-contact rules.
- GMP EC 2023/2006. Good Manufacturing Practice for materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. Ensures traceability and documented quality control in the manufacturing process.
- DIN 26057. German industrial standard for hoses for pneumatic conveyance, defining test methods for working pressure and vacuum.
- UL94-HB. US standard for flame retardancy. The hose self-extinguishes after horizontal ignition.
- REACH. EU Regulation 1907/2006 on the registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemicals.
- RoHS. EU Directive 2011/65/EU on the restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
The hose is not ATEX-approved and not electrically conductive. For processes that require both food contact and explosion protection, special variants are available, and we are happy to advise on the right choice.

Industries that use it
The hose is used across many different industrial contexts. Common to them is the combination of abrasive media and requirements for food or pharmaceutical contact.
In the food industry it is a core application, used for conveying dry and wet food ingredients between processing stages. In the pharmaceutical industry it is used for powder management in mixing processes, for filling tablet presses, and for batch transfers where traceability is critical. In the agricultural industry it forms part of grain, seed and feed transfer.
In conveying and bulk industry it is used for pneumatic conveyance between silos and production lines. In the plastics industry it is used for granulate conveyance to food-contact packaging, and in mechanical engineering it forms part of central process systems in food production.
It is also used in cleaning machine industry for industrial vacuum cleaners and cleaning machines in food facilities, and in environmental and cleaning technology for waste and recycling in the food industry.
Custom lengths and assemblies
AIRDUC® PUR 351 FOOD (MD) can be cut to length and assembled with food-grade couplings, cuffs and threaded fittings to fit your installation precisely. We make complete hose assemblies with crimped ferrules, clamping collars or threaded connections, depending on what the process requires.
For food and pharmaceutical installations, it is especially important that couplings and fittings are also food-grade and can be cleaned to the same level as the hose. The point is that the entire system meets the food-contact requirements, not only the hose itself.

Frequently asked questions
Is AIRDUC® PUR 351 FOOD (MD) food-grade?
Yes. The hose is approved to EU 1935/2004 and EU 10/2011 (categories A, B, C, D2 and E) and complies with FDA 21 CFR 177.2600. The food-grade polyurethane is tested by an independent laboratory for the complete hose. The hose also complies with the German Food and Feed Code (LFGB) and is manufactured following good manufacturing practice (GMP) per EC 2023/2006.
Which food categories does the approval cover?
EU 10/2011 classifies foodstuffs into categories based on fat content, acidity and solubility. AIRDUC® PUR 351 FOOD (MD) is tested and approved for category A (aqueous foodstuffs), B (acidic foodstuffs pH<4.5), C (alcoholic beverages <20 %), D2 (dairy products) and E (dry foodstuffs such as grains and powders). This covers the great majority of industrial food streams.
What is the difference between the FOOD variant and the EC variant of AIRDUC® PUR 351?
The FOOD variant is food-grade per EU 1935/2004 and FDA but is not conductive. The EC variant is electrically conductive and ATEX-approved but is not food-grade. The construction and dimensions are otherwise identical. The choice depends on whether the process requires food contact or explosion protection. For processes requiring both, other variants are available, and we are happy to advise on the right choice.
What temperature range does the hose tolerate?
The normal operating range is -40 °C to +90 °C. Short-term peaks up to +125 °C are permitted, which makes the hose suitable for CIP (Cleaning in Place) at typical temperatures. For warmer food processes such as steam cleaning, other hose types in the FlexCore range are available, typically silicone- or PTFE-based constructions.
Can AIRDUC® PUR 351 FOOD (MD) be supplied in custom lengths?
Yes. The hose can be cut to length and assembled with food-grade couplings, cuffs and threaded fittings through Particulair's custom hose assemblies. Maximum production length varies from 10 to 30 m depending on diameter (see the dimension table).
Is the hose ATEX-approved?
No. AIRDUC® PUR 351 FOOD (MD) is neither conductive nor ATEX-approved. For food processes that are also located in ATEX zones, special variants combining food-grade approval with a conductive wall are available. Contact us for advice and assessment of the specific requirement.
Is the hose flame-retardant?
Yes. The hose is flame-retardant per UL94-HB, meaning it self-extinguishes after horizontal ignition in a standardised test setup. Note that flame-retardancy per UL94-HB is not equivalent to ATEX compliance. The hose must not be used in ATEX-classified zones based on the flame-retardancy alone.
