Zone 21 external — the broadest external dust zone certificate in the class

The MTL 301 1/2D is Delfin's ATEX vacuum cleaner with the broadest combined zone certification in the MTL range for 3D printing: Zone 20 internal (category 1D, EPL Da) and Zone 21 external (category 2D, EPL Db). This makes it the only model in the range that may be placed in production environments classified as external Zone 21 — areas where an explosive dust atmosphere may occasionally be present in the surroundings under normal operating conditions. Zone 21 is more stringent than Zone 22 and demands a higher external protection level (Db over Dc).

The unit is 3rd party certified by both IMQ (NB 0738) and IECEx, providing both EU ATEX coverage and international recognition in more than 30 countries including Norway, Switzerland, Australia and the Gulf States. The Dust Tight IP64 rating on the motor unit ensures that neither dust nor liquid can reach the electrical system.

HEPA H14, M-class filter and brushless motor option

The filter system consists of a primary Star/Tasche filter in antistatic polyester class M (IEC 60335-2-69) and a HEPA H14 safety filter (99.995 % at MPPS, EN 1822-5). An M-class antistatic disposable bag is included as standard — the bag collects the vacuumed powder and can be changed hygienically without direct operator contact. Manual filter shaking dislodges accumulated dust from the filter without opening the machine.

The standard motor is a 1.1 kW bypass motor delivering 215 m³/h at 2250 mmH₂O vacuum pressure. A brushless motor is available as an option for environments requiring longer motor service life. Noise level is 74 dB(A) (EN ISO 3744). The unit operates on 115–230 V single phase, making it suitable for both European and international installations. At 26 kg, it is compact enough to move easily between 3D printers.

Frequently asked questions

Both classifications provide Zone 20 protection internally in the tank (1D). The difference is the external classification: II 1/3D (such as the Tiger-Vac C-10 EX and Delfin MTL 301 1/3D) provides external Zone 22, while II 1/2D provides external Zone 21. Zone 21 is more stringent, covering areas where an explosive dust atmosphere may occasionally be present under normal operating conditions — typically production lines with frequent handling of fine combustible powder or areas with inadequate ventilation. If your ATEX risk assessment has resulted in an external Zone 21 classification, the MTL 301 1/2D is the correct choice.
The ATEX Directive applies within the EU and EEA. IECEx is an international certification scheme recognised in more than 30 countries — including Norway, Switzerland, Australia, South Africa and the Gulf States. For companies with facilities or supplier relationships outside the EU, the IECEx certificate is the documentation that applies. Both certificates are issued by IMQ on the basis of the same 3rd party testing and cover the same construction and ATEX classification.
IP64 is a combined protection rating: 6 means complete protection against dust ingress (dust tight), and 4 means protection against water splashing from any direction. For an ATEX vacuum cleaner, the dust tightness is particularly important — it guarantees that combustible powder cannot enter the motor housing and come into contact with electrical components that could potentially act as a heat source or spark. IP64 is the requirement in EN 17348 for external Zone 21.
The brushless motor is relevant when longer motor service life, fewer planned service intervals or lower heat generation during extended operating periods are required. The mechanical design without carbon brushes reduces wear and significantly extends the expected service life compared to a conventional bypass motor. Contact Particulair for pricing and lead time on the MTL 301 1/2D with brushless motor.
The accessory kit (TA.0527.0000) includes a suction hose assembly, bent suction tubes, a crevice tool and a floor nozzle — all in antistatic or conductive material suitable for use with combustible dust in ATEX Zone 21. The M-class antistatic disposable bag (FI.0469.0000) is also included as standard. Contact Particulair for additional accessories or configurations for specific 3D printers.

Is the MTL 301 1/2D the right model for you?

We can help clarify whether the Zone 21 classification matches your risk assessment and production environment — and whether the bypass or brushless motor is the right configuration.
