TEFC motor — totally enclosed and explosion-safe

The EXP1-10 (40L) HEPA is Tiger-Vac's compact ATEX vacuum cleaner for medical and dental 3D printing, and what sets it apart from the other models in the range is the motor type. Where most ATEX vacuum cleaners use a bypass motor with a separate cooling airstream, the EXP1-10 is fitted with a TEFC motor — Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled. This means the motor is hermetically sealed and cooled externally, with no air passing through the motor housing. The motor is individually ATEX-certified as Ex d “flameproof enclosure” in gas group IIA and temperature class T3 (200°C), making it suitable for Zone 1 with the most common flammable gases and vapours.

The overall ATEX classification is II 2GD: Zone 1+2 for gas (Ex d IIA T3 Gb) and Zone 21+22 for dust (Ex t IIIC T200°C Db IP6X). The unit is 3rd party certified by LCIE (NB 0081) under certificate LCIE 03 ATEX 6297. The TEFC principle makes the motor well suited for continuous duty, as no heat builds up from exposed cooling air — a significant practical advantage during extended cleaning sessions at 3D printers.

Full AISI 304 construction and HEPA H14

The entire EXP1-10 — tank, motor housing, lid and frame — is manufactured in stainless steel AISI 304. This delivers high corrosion resistance, straightforward cleaning and a neutral appearance that fits naturally into clinical and laboratory surroundings. The IP6X dust protection rating ensures that no dust can enter the motor housing under any circumstances.

The HEPA H14 filter (99.99 % at 0.3 µm) and conductive cloth filter with support cage ensure that exhaust air is clean and particle-free. The conductive accessory system (under 10 ohm) safely dissipates electrostatic charge to earth. The 15 m cord provides the freedom of movement to reach around 3D printers without an extension lead.

Frequently asked questions

TEFC stands for Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled — a motor type where all air is kept outside the motor housing. Cooling is achieved via an external fan that directs ambient air across the outer surface of the motor, without air passing into the housing. In an ATEX environment this is a significant advantage, because flammable gas or combustible dust can never come into contact with the motor's electrical components — unlike a bypass motor, which actively draws ambient air through the motor housing. The TEFC motor is individually ATEX-certified as Ex d “flameproof enclosure” and may be used in Zone 1 and Zone 21.
II 2GD covers surface installations (group II), category 2 (occasional explosive atmosphere) for both gas (G) and dust (D). This means the EXP1-10 is certificate-approved for Zone 1 and Zone 2 for gas (gas group IIA — propane, butane and similar) and Zone 21 and Zone 22 for combustible dust (dust group IIIC). Temperature class T3 (gas) corresponds to 200°C — the same applies for dust (T200°C). The IP6X dust protection rating ensures that no dust can enter the motor housing under any circumstances.
The two values refer to measurements at reduced and full performance respectively, depending on airflow and back pressure in the suction system. In practice, the actual noise exposure will depend on the connected accessories, hose length and the specific port size of the 3D printer. Both values are measured under the manufacturer's test conditions. At 85 dB(A), hearing protection is required under occupational health regulations — it is advisable to carry out a local noise measurement under actual operating conditions.
Yes, within the scope of dry recovery. Dust group IIIC and T200°C cover most plastic powders (PA12, PA11, TPU, PEEK) and reactive metal powders suitable for dry collection. However, the gas group IIA is a limitation: the model covers propane, butane and similar, but not gas group IIB (ethylene) or IIC (hydrogen, acetylene). For environments with gas group IIB or IIC, the ATEX-10A (40L) HEPA model with broader gas certification (IIC) is required. Contact Particulair for an assessment of your specific process gas and zone classification.
The 3D tool kit for the 60 mm conductive inlet includes a conductive suction hose assembly (38 mm × 3 m, STATPATH), a conical nozzle with curved tip in conductive rubber, a round brush assembly (ESD-safe plastic, for 38 mm hose) and a crevice tool (aluminium, 38 mm, black rubber, conductive and oil resistant). Conductive disposable bags (3 pcs.) and a conductive poly liner (40 L) are also included. Optional additional 3D tools are available — contact Particulair for the configuration suited to your 3D printer.

Is the EXP1-10 (40L) HEPA the right model for you?

We can help clarify whether the TEFC model suits your zone classification, process gas and powder type — or whether a different ATEX model is the right solution.
