What is the Delfin PHARMA 40.40 DC?

The PHARMA 40.40 DC is the closed-containment version of Delfin's PHARMA 40.40 platform. DC stands for Dust Containment — signalling that this vacuum does not merely collect powder but actively contains it throughout the entire chain: from the cyclonic pre-separator that retains at least 98 % of the powder before it ever reaches the filter, to the BIBO system that allows H14 filter changes without the operator touching the collected material, to the crimpable containment bag that seals all collected matter before it leaves the machine. All three barriers are standard equipment, not options.

The unit can be deployed as a dedicated machine vacuum alongside a single tablet press — such as FETTE and similar platforms — or integrated into a centralised vacuum system serving multiple process lines simultaneously. For demanding integration environments, a control panel with BMS signal output is available, and operator HMI panels can be configured to specification.

The drive unit is a side channel blower — an industrial turbine cooled independently of the process air that runs continuously around the clock without thermal limitations. The construction is in AISI 304 satin-finished steel with AISI 316 on all product-contact surfaces.

OEB boundary: The PHARMA 40.40 DC is rated for direct extraction of HPAPI up to OEB 5. For processes requiring only OEB 3, the base model PHARMA 40.40 (without DC) is a more cost-effective choice. Contact us for guidance on the right OEB level and configuration for your processes.

The three containment barriers as standard

The cyclonic pre-separator is mounted upstream of the filter and retains up to 98 % of the collected powder. This significantly extends filter service life and ensures that only a minimal residual fraction reaches the H14 filter. The cyclone can be fitted with a WIP (Wash in Place) function as an option, enabling in-situ cleaning of the separator and hopper.

The filtration system consists of an upstream H14 absolute filter with BIBO system (Bag-in Bag-out) and a downstream H14 absolute filter. The BIBO system allows the spent filter to be encapsulated in a sterile single-use bag during replacement, so the operator never directly handles the collected material. The filter housing is stainless steel with a BIBO support plate as an accessory (part no. SL.5907.0017).

The collection system is a crimpable containment bag placed inside the collection container before startup. When the container is full, the bag is crimped shut using a crimping tool — also following the BIBO principle, so the operator is not exposed to the collected material during emptying. The sealed contents can then be disposed of according to the facility's hazardous waste procedure.

Questions and answers

DC stands for Dust Containment. It indicates that the vacuum is configured specifically to contain hazardous powders throughout the entire process — from collection through to disposal. The base model PHARMA 40.40 is rated OEB 3 with a Class M star filter as primary filtration. The DC version is the OEB 4–5 configuration with cyclone, H14 BIBO and crimp-bag collection as standard.
BIBO stands for Bag-in Bag-out. It is a filter replacement method that ensures the spent filter — which is contaminated with the collected material — is never directly handled by the operator. During replacement, the filter is encapsulated in a sterile single-use bag before it is removed from the filter housing. BIBO is the standard requirement in most validation protocols for OEB 4–5 processes, which is why the DC version ships with BIBO as standard equipment.
The PHARMA 40.40 is the OEB 3 version: primary filtration is a Class M antistatic star filter with 20,000 cm² surface area, and H14 absolute filtration is an option. The collection container is 42 L in AISI 304. The PHARMA 40.40 DC (Dust Containment) is the dedicated OEB 4–5 configuration: it features an integrated cyclone (≥98 %), H14 BIBO filtration as standard, a crimp-bag collection system and a 30 L container with AISI 316 on product-contact surfaces. The DC version is rated for direct extraction of HPAPI up to OEB 5.
Yes. The PHARMA 40.40 DC can be configured as a central system serving multiple process lines via a pipework installation. In that configuration, the side channel blower's high vacuum level and continuous-duty profile are a distinct advantage. For central installation, a control panel with BMS signal output is available and operator HMI panels can be configured to the facility's specifications. Contact us for pre-engineering of a central installation.
The standard version is not ATEX certified. ATEX Cat. 2GD (Zone 21 external) can be added as an option to the DC configuration, allowing the vacuum to be located in a Zone 21 environment. Contact us to clarify whether ATEX is relevant for your installation.
