What is the Delfin PHARMA 40.40?

The PHARMA 40.40 is Delfin's compact industrial vacuum designed for direct extraction of powdered active ingredients at process machinery — typically tablet presses, blister machines and similar production equipment. It is not meant to be wheeled around the facility for general floor cleaning. It is meant to be positioned beside the machine, running continuously throughout the production cycle, capturing dust and particles at the source before they reach the production environment.

The drive unit is a side channel blower — a motor architecture that differs fundamentally from the thru-flow and bypass motors found in most pharmaceutical handheld vacuums. The side channel blower is an industrial turbine designed for continuous 24/7 operation without thermal constraints or the duty cycle restrictions that apply to intermittent motors. That is precisely the operating profile required when the machine never stops.

The standard filtration system is built around a large antistatic star filter in Class M with 20,000 cm² of filter surface. A star filter folds the filter medium into a star-shaped structure, providing maximum filter area in a compact format. The integrated manual shaking mechanism dislodges accumulated powder from the filter surfaces to regenerate filtration efficiency during operation. For processes involving more hazardous materials, the unit can be upgraded with an H14 absolute filter — either downstream only, or with a full BIBO system (Bag-In Bag-Out) that allows safe filter replacement without direct contact with collected material.

The container is 42 L in AISI 304 stainless steel, satin finished externally and polished internally, with a Clamp Ø70 quick-connection in AISI 304. The container is emptied via a Safe Bag sealed collection system — a sealed single-use bag that ensures collected material is not dispersed during emptying. Safe Bag is an optional add-on (part no. FI.0469.0000).

OEB boundary: The PHARMA 40.40 in standard configuration is rated for OEB 3. For OEB 4 and OEB 5, the PHARMA 40.40 DC variant is required — it includes a cyclone pre-separator, BIBO H14 filtration and a closed collection system as standard. Contact us if your process requires OEB 4–5 containment.

Questions and answers

A thru-flow motor cools itself with the process air passing through it — efficient, but it means the motor is exposed to process air and that duty cycle limits should be respected. A side channel blower is a separate industrial turbine that is cooled independently of the process airstream. This makes it suitable for continuous around-the-clock operation without thermal constraints. The PHARMA 40.40 is designed to run throughout the entire production cycle without stopping, and the side channel blower is what makes that possible.
A star filter pleats the filter medium into a star-shaped structure along the filter's longitudinal axis. This delivers 20,000 cm² of filter surface in a compact format, far more than a flat or bag-type filter of the same size. The large surface area distributes the filter load evenly and prevents premature clogging. The integrated manual shaking mechanism dislodges accumulated powder from the filter surfaces to regenerate efficiency during operation. It is the right choice for continuous extraction with large volumes of fine powder.
The standard Class M filter is rated for OEB 3 and covers most API production processes. The H14 BIBO option is added when documented absolute filtration at the exhaust is required, or when the filter change procedure demands that the operator has no direct contact with collected material. BIBO (Bag-In Bag-Out) allows the spent filter to be enveloped in a containment bag during replacement, so no material is released to the production environment. This is the standard requirement in many validation protocols for highly potent compound processes.
Safe Bag is an optional collection system for the PHARMA 40.40. Instead of emptying the container directly, a sealed bag is placed inside the tank before operation. When the tank is full, the bag is crimped closed — using a crimping tool (part no. KT.1782.0000) — before it is removed from the tank. The collected material is then contained in a sealed, single-use bag that can be disposed of according to the facility's procedure for hazardous waste without any risk of dispersal. Replacement bags (part no. FI.0469.0000) are purchased separately.
The PHARMA 40.40 is the OEB 3 platform: primary filter is a Class M star filter and H14 absolute filtration is optional. The PHARMA 40.40 DC (Dust Containment) is the dedicated OEB 4–5 variant: it includes an integrated cyclone pre-separator retaining up to 98% of powder before the filter, an H14 absolute filter with BIBO system as standard, and closed collection via crimp bag. The collection container is in AISI 316. The DC version is specified for direct extraction of HPAPI up to OEB 5. Contact us for guidance on the right OEB level for your compounds.
