A hose is rarely the cause of a leak. The wrong coupling, an under-tightened clamp, or a thread standard that doesn't match the rest of the system — that is. On the accessories side, dimension, material and standard choices have to bind the whole system together.
Accessories are what in practice determine whether a hose installation works or not — particularly in the critical environments where one coupling can break an earthing chain. The wrong coupling in an ATEX zone breaks the earthing chain. The wrong gasket for pharma CIP migrates into the cleaning chemistry. Accessories decide whether the hose installation works
We see again and again that a perfectly chosen hose ends up failing because of a coupling that didn't match — or because of a thread reducer used to bridge a gap in the warehouse stock. On the accessories side, the small compromises become the big safety problems.
Thread standards — the four most often confused
DIN threads are typical in German and Nordic industry. BSP exists in two variants: BSPP (parallel) and BSPT (tapered) — not interchangeable. NPT is American, tapered and uses different pitch from BSP. Metric is not the same as DIN even though it looks similar.
Forcing an NPT thread into a BSP socket destroys both threads. Even the correct tapered angle differs, and the joint will leak under pressure. Always use a thread reference or measure when in doubt.
Couplings in ATEX zones
In explosive atmospheres, the coupling is often where the earthing chain breaks. The material choice must therefore not only resist the medium — it must also conduct charges from the hose's helix into the rest of the system.
Aluminium and stainless steel work as conductive couplings. Galvanised steel poses a thermite reaction risk under hard impact against rust (per EN 1127-1) and should be avoided in Zone 1 and Zone 21. Glued couplings without direct metal contact between the hose's copper wire and the coupling body isolate the hose electrically — it feels solid, but in practice it is broken.
Hose clamps and assembly discipline
A clamp that is under-tightened leaks. A clamp that is over-tightened cuts into the hose wall and creates a weakness that later turns into a crack. The manufacturer's torque recommendation is concrete — follow it, and use a torque wrench where ATEX, pharma or chemical transport are involved.

Which coupling fits my hose?
Choose the coupling based on the hose's inner and outer diameter, the desired fastening method (clamp coupling, swaged, glued with metal contact), and the thread standard on the connecting side. The hose factsheet often specifies recommended coupling types. The wrong choice can splay the hose or break electrical contact.
Must the coupling be from the same manufacturer as the hose?
Not necessarily, but compatibility must be verified. The manufacturer's hose is typically tested with their own couplings, and dimensional tolerances match. Third-party couplings often work fine, but particularly for ATEX use or GMP traceability, the coupling supplier should also be able to document compatibility with the hose.
What applies to couplings in ATEX zones?
The coupling must be conductive and must not break the earthing chain. Aluminium and stainless steel work; galvanised steel can be problematic due to the thermite reaction under hard impact against rust (per EN 1127-1). Conductive contact between the hose's helix and the coupling's metal parts is critical — glued couplings without metal contact isolate the hose.
Can I mix thread standards?
No, not without an adapter. DIN, BSP, NPT and metric have different thread geometries; even when they look similar, pitch and diameter differ. Forcing an NPT thread into a BSP socket damages both and causes leaks. Use a thread reference or a reducer to convert from one standard to another.

The manufacturer's thread standards PDF is in the documentation section. It covers DIN, BSP (parallel and tapered), NPT, metric and special threads with dimension tables and diagrams. Use it to verify that the thread you think you have is actually the thread on the drawing.
